What is Linux, and how is it related to Android and macOS?

What is Linux?

It’s basically an open source kernel that powers many operating systems, used mostly by developers.

  • Many software developers use Linux, which is more optimized for development than Windows.
  • Most cloud servers are running linux. 99% chance this forum is being hosted on a linux server
  • Some people use linux-based operating systems, like Ubuntu, as regular computer OS instead of Windows. There are numerous benefits and drawbacks. Practically, it is mostly used by very techy people, and avoided by non-techy people.
  • Android is based off of linux.
  • MacOS is also based off of linux
  • many embedded devices run linux (for example security cameras often do)

macos might be similar but not based off of Linux

I stand corrected, you are right. Thank you for the correction.

(For anyone wondering the reason I am wrong:

MacOS is based off of Unix , and is fully unix compliant and certified. Linux is inspired by Unix, and very similar to Unix in many ways, and tries to be (and mostly is) compliant.

So MacOS is not at all based off of linux.)
