Dumbphone users have long relied on GroupMe for having group chats with kosher phone users. When GroupMe recently announced that they’re shutting down their SMS option, we were left scrambling to find an alternative.

If phones wouldn’t have been invented before the Internet, then everything would have been decentralized.
Calls, texts/messaging and data. (Think, no APN issues with MMS etc)
There’s absolutely no reason that anything should be given to you by the carrier. The whole texting thing is only because of the carrier giving you calls. And that’s where texting size limits come from.
WhatsApp is just the way it should have obviously been. The only problem is that it can’t communicate with messaging platforms outside of WhatsApp. If messaging would have been decentralized like email is, then everything would be perfect.
The carrier should just be giving you internet and everything else should be decentralized.
There’s absolutely no reason that if someone is traveling that they have to pay for roaming calls texts and data. Just a data plan should be enough.
As you write, just like email.
Basically, the problems started when big companies entered the picture.
When it was just a bunch of geeks, enthusiasts, small developers, and companies that played fair, then things were a lot more open, human, and healthy.
But for the record, the ICANN and huge domain registries gating acess to domains is the webs equivalent to phone numbers.
The difference there is that it’s a lot more open, and the gatekeeper, ICANN, is a non profit that controls things for security, to keep the web organized, and only charges to cover it’s expenses.
